Looking for the perfect logistics and warehousing software solution? You've probably found it a challenge to find the ideal out-of-the-box package.

At CartonCloud, we have thousands of users and we understand the struggle. You're likely looking for something that's plug-and-play. In this post, we'll explain why such solutions are so difficult to find in the marketplace, and what companies should look towards instead.

All operations have unique characteristics

No two warehouses are exactly the same. Sure, they may share some very common elements, but each warehouse has variations. These include inventory size, type, volume and placement. Then there is the amount of staff, machinery and equipment to shift inventory. Let's also not forget any existing software systems that are active in your organization.

Some operations choose to remain a little behind on technology. Then there are the others who understand the importance of a warehouse management system and the unique characteristics in their operations, with a pro-activeness to find a custom solution today. CartonCloud works with those who are ready to embrace technology with a robust and unique system for their operations.

Generic software has limited customization

Many opt for the cheaper out-of-the-box software solutions, only to later find that customization are very limited. This is because such software is built to a standard to (hopefully) meet the needs of the majority of users. As we just detailed, all operations do have unique characteristics.

You may find that the software lacks custom features, modules or applications. You might wish to have a custom interface that's unique to your operation. This is handy when drivers are conducting deliveries and wish to do electronic proof of deliveries, as customers can see your branding. Shelf-ready software generally only provide some generic interfaces which aren't so professional.

This functionality and customization gap is a key reason why many opt for a more custom approach to their operations. Features which aren't usable by an organization can be swapped out for those which are. CartonCloud often works with clients to address their unique individual needs in their workplace.

There is potential to become obsolete

Some cookie-cutter software solutions are updated to meet the needs of their users as a whole, not individually. Whilst this can be a great attribute, there's potential for you systems to be obsolete when compared to your own competitors who are likely using a custom software solution with an active account manager. This is because such generic software developers are only updating with the trend, and also don't wish to upset existing users with big changes.

World-class operations seek to be ahead of the trend. They simply aren't interested in obsolete or slow-moving systems. Time is money, and productivity is one of the most measured KPI's in an operation. They choose to break-away from trying to find the 'perfect' solution off the shelf, and choose to use a system that's custom tailored to their individual workplace needs.

Moving forward

We understand the allure of out-of-the-box software solutions, particularly the lower upfront cost. We think it's also wise to consider the cost of reduced functionality and the lack of features in such generic software solutions. Essentially, there is a cost either way, and so it is difficult to find the perfect solution. Cheap and well performing are seldom found together in this logistics software industry.

CartonCloud can help your organization to reduce productivity costs whilst increasing operational through-put. Give us a call today to see if we can address your biggest hurdles.
